A remarkable wildlife photograph captured off Australia’s New South Wales coast shows a seal appearing to ride on the back of a humpback whale. The extraordinary encounter happened near Eden during a busy period of marine activity and was photographed by Australian wildlife photographer Robyn Malcolm.
The image later attracted widespread attention because of the extraordinary sight: a relatively small seal sitting on the enormous back of a humpback whale as waves broke around them. Although the photograph looks almost too unusual to be real, contemporary reports confirmed that it was an authentic image.
The Unusual Seal and Humpback Whale Encounter
The encounter took place during a whale-watching trip off the coast of Eden in New South Wales. Malcolm had gone out to photograph whales but found herself surrounded by an unusually active scene involving several kinds of marine wildlife.
Dolphins, birds, seals and humpback whales were all feeding in the same general area. With so much happening on the water, Malcolm was continuously taking photographs, sometimes without knowing exactly what each frame had captured.
It was only later, while reviewing the photographs, that she discovered one of the most unusual moments of the day.
Among the images was a seal positioned on the back of a humpback whale.
Photographer Did Not Notice the Moment
Perhaps the most surprising detail is that Malcolm did not immediately realize she had photographed the seal riding the whale.
According to her account, the activity was happening so quickly that she was simply trying to capture whatever she could. When she later went through the photographs and removed unsuccessful shots, the unusual animal pairing suddenly became clear.
The photograph showed the seal apparently resting on the whale’s back as the large animal moved through the water.
Malcolm said she had initially been unsure what she was seeing in the water. The moment was so brief that she did not watch the event unfold in the same way a viewer studying the finished photograph could.
Why Was the Seal on the Whale?
There is no confirmed evidence that the seal intentionally chose the whale as a form of transportation.
Malcolm offered her own explanation for what may have happened. She suggested that the whale could have lunged upward while feeding, possibly coming up beneath the seal and creating the brief opportunity for the animal to land on its back.
That explanation is important because the photograph can easily encourage a more playful interpretation.
It may look as though the seal deliberately climbed onto the whale for a ride, but wildlife encounters do not always have such straightforward explanations. A few seconds of movement, feeding activity and waves could have brought the two animals together accidentally.
A Rare Sight in the Wild
Experts described the combination as highly unusual.
National Geographic reported that a whale expert with New South Wales National Parks considered a seal riding a whale to be rare. While marine animals regularly share feeding areas, actually seeing one animal positioned on another in this way is an entirely different matter.
The unusual photograph therefore provides a glimpse of behavior that most wildlife observers would be unlikely to witness.
Seals and humpback whales can both be present in productive coastal waters, particularly where large concentrations of fish attract multiple predators and other marine animals. But being in the same area does not normally mean one species will end up physically riding another.
That is what made Malcolm’s photograph so striking.
The Animals Were Feeding at the Time
The encounter happened during a period of intense feeding activity.
Malcolm reported seeing whales, dolphins, seals and birds participating in the same busy marine environment. Another contemporary report noted that several humpback whales were feeding around bait fish, creating a chaotic scene on the water.
Humpback whales are well known for feeding on schools of small fish and other prey using specialized techniques. The whales use baleen rather than teeth to filter food from seawater.
Reports from the same event also described bubble-feeding behavior among the whales, in which bubbles can help concentrate fish into a tighter group before the whales move through the area to feed.
With so many animals competing for the same food source, it is possible that the seal was simply taking advantage of the feeding activity.
The Photograph Faced Questions Online
The unusual appearance of the image naturally led some people to question whether it had been digitally altered.
Malcolm strongly rejected that suggestion. She explained that she still had the original images stored on her camera and said she could demonstrate that the photograph was genuine. ABC News also reported her comments about keeping the original material as evidence.
At the time, the photograph spread rapidly online and appeared across international news and wildlife publications.
Its appeal was easy to understand. The image combined two familiar marine animals in a situation that looked almost comical while remaining completely grounded in the unpredictability of nature.
Seals Are Regular Visitors to Australian Waters
Although the seal riding the humpback whale was exceptional, seeing seals along Australia’s southern coast was not unusual for Malcolm.
She described seals as energetic and sometimes playful animals that could be seen around the region. Their behavior, combined with the large number of marine species found along Australia’s coastline, can create memorable encounters for photographers and whale watchers.
The waters around Eden are particularly well known for marine wildlife. Humpback whales migrate along Australia’s eastern coastline, making whale-watching opportunities an important part of the region’s wildlife tourism.
For photographers, however, the biggest challenge is often being ready when something unexpected happens.
A Moment That Could Not Be Planned
Wildlife photography depends heavily on timing.
A photographer can spend hours waiting for a whale to surface or a seal to appear, yet the most memorable photograph may happen in a fraction of a second. Malcolm’s experience is a perfect example: she was focused on the larger feeding activity and did not realize the unusual interaction had been captured until afterward.
That makes the photograph particularly fascinating.
It was not a staged encounter, a trained-animal performance or a planned photograph. It was a fleeting moment between wild animals that happened to be recorded by a camera.
Why the Seal Riding a Whale Image Still Fascinates People
The photograph remains memorable because it captures something that feels almost impossible while still reflecting the unpredictability of wildlife.
A seal sitting on a humpback whale creates an enormous visual contrast between the two animals. The whale’s size makes the seal appear tiny, while the waves surrounding them emphasize the scale and movement of the ocean.
